Please don’t underestimate the difficulty of this. And it really is work… blending different families takes insight, effort, empathy and patience.


We’ve each been through it. So have many people in our community and we’d love to share some tips. One of the best things you can do right away… Always keep in mind that everybody involved is in a new place, a period of adjustment that makes life much different. This empathy and awareness that you demonstrate will not go unnoticed.


The “intentional work” you do can easily encourage others to do their own work, make their own contributions and take a proactive role in pulling two families together. There’s a lot for everyone to handle. Chances are good that members of this new blended family are experiencing different levels of trauma. Fortunately, there are ways to approach this and things you can do to prevent jealousies. You can help members of this new blended family avoid many of the inevitable misunderstandings and you can reduce a lot of the simmering tensions.
